Migraines & Pain Mangement Info

Migraines

When there is a sudden increase in the supply of blood to scalp arteries, it results in a type of headache that is commonly known as migraine. Research has revealed that some brainwave patterns found in migraines are similar to those seen in a seizure. This has led to an inference by some scientists that migraine is a slow form of seizure. It can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting, aura (visual disturbance preceding the event) or related to certain food intakes.

On the other hand, tension headaches are triggered by muscle contractions in the head, neck or face. This condition is characterized by dull persistent pain in the head, which is likely to result from physical or emotional stress.

Can neurofeedback help migraines?

Because of the hyper-excitability of the central nervous system with migraines, neurofeedback can help to reduce the severity and frequency of migraines. Research has shown that approximately 70 percent of the people treated with neurofeedback experience at least a 50% reduction in the frequency of their migraines.

Both tension headaches and migraines are helped with neurofeedback to normalize the brain wave functioning. Peripheral biofeedback is helpful as a daily practice, by using calming strategies to enhance the benefits of the neurofeedback.

Pain Management

Pain management is a method resorted to for addressing the symptoms or conditions where chronic pain persists. The goal is to relieve the pain, alleviate the suffering and restore comfort to the patient. Unfortunately, chronic pain is a common problem that is not sufficiently addressed by current treatments.

Pharmacology is the most common treatment used to reduce chronic pain; however, this comes with considerable adverse side effects.

Researchers discovered that perception and response to chronic pain are sent to the brain’s cortical and subcortical sites. Through neurofeedback, we can alleviate the experience of pain without the adverse side effects of analgesics.

Changes in the EEG waveforms have been associated with pain, including chronic pain. It has been shown that the brain plays an important role in chronic pain, and the use of neurofeedback has been shown to be an effective mechanism in the treatment of chronic pain.

Can neurofeedback help relieve chronic pain?
Research has shown that neurofeedback can relieve the subjective experience of pain. This is done by training the brain to increase or decrease relative power of different EEG bandwidths that are associated with the painful experience.
